I use to fish the Jim Wilson tuesday night tournaments there in the late 80's but haven't fished there since. We were throwing lunker lures and catching most of our fish the last 30 minutes b4 dark back then.
I did fish a daytime tourny around 1990 from the back of a boat. The guy I drew only used one bait, a dark 6" worm with a fire colored curly tail. He would throw to the stumps we were fishing around and let it have line to go to the bottom. He would then take up the slack and feel for a fish. If no fish was there he would reel the worm in a fast as he could and cast again. I ask him what was he doing? The old timer said, "90% of all bass that bite a rubber worm bite it on the initial fall". He said, "I'm just playing the odds", and made another cast.
I learned something that day as we boated fish after fish. As I remember they were not big but we caught a bunch of fish. Don't remember who won but I won something better than money. I had been schooled by an ol' timer and this is the 1st time I've shared it. 1st time anyones ask me about deerpoint and you my friend have jogged a good fishing lesson from my memory. If you can find some, give an ol firetail a try and watch that tail flicker out of sight into that black water.. |

It's a great place to fish and I live about 15 minutes away. Merrits Mill Pond is the home to the World Record Shellcracker, 5+ pounds, caught by a buddy Joey Floyd while skipping school when he was 16 yo. I think the record may have been broken since. It's been 30 years ago but the mill pond, as we call it, is loaded with monster shellcracker and huge 10_ lb bass are caught every year. Water is a constant 72 degress year round and crystal clear. Lots of caves and scuba diving there as well as a big swimming area at the head of the pond with places to cook, play volleyball, beachs, etc.. You can dive into the mouth of the huge cave which pours millons of gallons a water each day and is a huge recreation area for thousands of tourist and locals each year.
I've actually started to suggest Arrowhead campsite as a possible location for the annual gnu rally as it has everything we would want or need. Shorty the owner is a friend and would love to have us. It's got small log cabins, places for tents, campers, boat ramp, etc... Ppl could fish, swim, scuba dive around the caves, and we got tubes trips down the chipola that would intertain all including kids, wives, etc.. And it's about 5 miles long so we could run the gnu's too, in other words it's not a pond even though it's called one.
You need to bring the gnu up and give it a try as the gnu is the perfect boat to get around the cypress trees where a lot of the fish are. Bring your camera as the place is one of the most picturist places you'll ever see. It's beautiful! Use lighter lb test line unless fishing at night as the water is very clear. | Yes!! Ask captain Mercer about Allen Chason. We worked together for years at ACI untill he promoted. We've travelled thousands of miles up, down, and across the state of fla for several years. Real good guy and very smart. His brother is our outside grounds sgt and the sniper on our CERT team. Played college ball I think at kentucky and in excelant physical condition. Our teams been training for 6 weeks for a big CERT compition friday at Gulf. Do you work there? |

Were u refuring to capt Noel Andy Mercer or his dad? I worked with Andy.
I've worked in the arsenal at ACI since 2005. Very interesting job to say the least. I know your arsenal guys too. Sgt Land and robbie are good folks. Your warden and assistant both came from aci. Small world ain't it.. |

Oh my! Me and Mike go waaaaaaaaaaaaay back!!! We went to high school together, played ball together, worked together for years at winn dixie, and then at aci. I heard about the one that died after he gassed him a couple weeks ago. Bad deal right there. 1st time a situation like this has happened while using chemcal agents. His wife works in the C/R on mdnight shift. Good People!!! Make sure you tell him I said hey, and don't believe everything he tells u about me. We go way back... |
